Voice Type Test: Estimate Your Singing Voice Category

This voice type test estimates your singing category from your lowest and highest comfortable notes. It compares your tested range with six broad categories—Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Contralto, Mezzo-Soprano, and Soprano—and shows the percentage of each standard range that your notes cover.

The result is a range-based estimate, not a definitive professional classification. Voice teachers also consider tessitura, timbre, vocal weight, passaggio, age, experience, and how the voice functions across its range.

How to Use the Voice Type Test

  1. Choose Microphone detection or Manual note selection.
  2. Select Lower voices, Higher voices, or Show all categories.
  3. Identify your lowest comfortable, repeatable note.
  4. Identify your highest comfortable, repeatable note.
  5. Calculate the result after both boundaries are set.
  6. Review the primary match, secondary match, overlap percentages, tested range, frequencies, semitone span, octave span, and keyboard visualization.

Use notes you can reproduce without pain, excessive pressure, or a strained sound. A momentary extreme may widen the numerical range without representing where your voice works comfortably.

Manual mode defaults to C3–C5. The musical-note buttons beside each selector play a short synthesized sine reference at A4 = 440 Hz.

Both methods use exactly the same classification calculations.

Stable Note Locking

Microphone mode does not accept every brief pitch reading. A note becomes lockable only after the plugin has collected at least 10 recent estimates with:

  • Autocorrelation confidence of at least 72%
  • Pitch variation below 0.18 semitones
  • A detectable signal above the internal amplitude threshold

The detector analyzes 2,048-sample waveform blocks and searches for repeating periods corresponding to approximately 65–1,000 Hz. Room noise, vibrato, breathiness, microphone quality, and strong harmonics can still affect the detected note.

These ranges overlap intentionally. Standard descriptions also show substantial overlap between neighboring categories, especially soprano and mezzo-soprano or tenor and baritone.

The plugin uses Contralto, not a separate Alto category. Alto commonly describes a choral part, while contralto is a singing voice classification.

How Range-Overlap Scoring Works

For each available category, the plugin finds the intersection between your tested range and the category range.

It then calculates:

overlapping note positions ÷ category note positions × 100

Both boundary notes are counted. The percentage is rounded to the nearest whole number.

The category with the highest overlap becomes the primary match. The category with the second-highest score becomes the secondary overlapping type.

When two categories receive the same overlap percentage, the category whose lowest note is closer to your tested lowest note is ranked first.

This is not a probability that you “are” that voice type. It reports only how much of that category’s predefined range is covered by your selected notes.

How to Read the Results

Estimated primary voice type is the category with the strongest overlap.

Secondary overlapping type shows the next-best category and its percentage. A close secondary result is normal because voice ranges are not separated by rigid boundaries.

Tested range displays your low and high notes in scientific pitch notation.

Semitone span equals the highest MIDI-style note number minus the lowest.

Octave span equals the semitone span divided by 12.

Lowest and highest frequencies are calculated in equal temperament using A4 = 440 Hz:

frequency = 440 × 2^((note number − 69) ÷ 12)

The overlap chart displays every category available under the selected voice group. The keyboard highlights the tested span, its two boundaries, and the primary category range.

Why Range Alone Cannot Fully Classify a Voice

A singer may reach the notes of two or more categories while feeling comfortable mainly in one. That comfortable region is called tessitura, and it is often more useful for classification than isolated extreme notes.

This tool does not measure:

  • Tessitura
  • Timbre or vocal color
  • Vocal weight
  • Passaggio locations
  • Register coordination
  • Tone quality
  • Repertoire suitability
  • Classical Fach subtype

Professional classification uses several of these factors together. The six broad labels are useful reference categories, but they do not capture every voice or singing style.

Practical Testing Tips

Warm up gently before finding your boundaries. Sing one clear vowel, keep microphone distance consistent, and avoid accompaniment during automatic detection.

Use notes you can repeat several times. If a boundary appears only once, retest it rather than treating it as part of your comfortable range.

Try the relevant Lower or Higher group first. Use Show all categories when you specifically want to compare all six ranges under the same scoring method.

Privacy, Copying, and History

Microphone audio is processed locally in the browser and is not recorded or uploaded.

Copy result includes the primary and secondary matches, tested range, semitone span, and octave span.

Reset test clears the active result and selected boundaries. It does not remove recent results.

The plugin stores up to eight completed tests in current-tab sessionStorage. Clear history removes those entries without resetting the current calculation.

Use your highest comfortable, repeatable note rather than a strained one-time extreme. The same rule applies to the lowest boundary.

Can I use the test without a microphone?

Yes. Manual mode lets you select notes from C2 through C6 and hear reference tones before calculating.

Does vocal range determine voice type?

Not by itself. Tessitura, timbre, vocal weight, passaggio, technique, and repertoire demands also matter.

Can training change my result?

Training may change the notes you can sing comfortably and therefore change the range-overlap result. The plugin does not determine whether your underlying professional classification has changed.
